4-in-1 measuring instrument integrating the automatic measure of the objective sphero-cylindrical refraction error, of the keratometry, of the intraocular pressure and the pachymetry. Several readings in the same device!
The TONOREF III is used to get the precise objective refraction of a patient. Coupling the SLD (Super Luminescent Diod) and the high-sensibility CCD sensor enables getting sharp and contrast images. This system is efficient when the transparency of media starts being altered, as in case of a cataract.
The TONOREF III also includes the measurement of the keratometry (measurement of the corneal radius curvature). Keratometry readings are performed using the double ring target technology that reduces the influence of the eyelids. Diameters 3.3 mm and 2.4 mm are measured. Then these values are compared to provide a better understanding of the cornea shape.
The TONOREF III also includes a forced-air tonometer. This system is used to control the intraocular pressure, through the calculation of the mechanical force required to flatten the central corneal area. The contactless tonometer uses an air jet to flatten the cornea.
Thanks to the APC (‘Automatic Puff Control’) technology, the measurement is performed very smoothly. The power of the air jet is automatically adjusted, depending on the patient’s intraocular pressure, to optimise the comfort and reduce the noise level during the reading.
As a Scheimpflug camera is built in the TONOREF III, measuring the corneal thickness (pachymetry), without any contact with the eye, is possible. This pachymetry value is used to apply a correction factor to the figure of the intraocular pressure, depending on the central corneal thickness.
Forced-air tonometers use the same principle. They measure the force required to deform the eye and they deduce the pressure. The center of the cornea is the part of the eye that is deformed. It is then obvious that, if the deformation of the cornea is abnormal, deducting the pressure will be faulty. It happens when the cornea is abnormally thick (it can deform as easily) or abnormally thin (it can deform easily).
The TONOREF III provides an image of the retro-illumination to observe the transparency and the opacity of the media. The opacity factors provide additional information.
Thanks to the ‘Auto-Tracking’ and ‘Auto-Shoot’, the devices of the NIDEK range provide quick, easy and accurate.
